  4. I feel like the editor is non-existent. The tenses are a mess, typos are abundant, and some sentences obviously should be separated. Much of the original meaning is also lost in some sentences, for example: “”Where do I land?” Luo Qianxue wondered, got up and looked around.” ‘Where do I land’? is very likely to be “Where did I land?”. Many sentences are clunky, too – “What a spicy girl!” is too awkward. What is it even saying?

    This critique may be harsh, but necessary. I doubt the editor even looked through this – or maybe, the editor simply is not well versed in English, but that is NOT an excuse. Why did you even sign up to be an editor if you’re terrible at English, which is basically a necessity for editing?

    (The following sentences are sarcasm, if you couldn’t suss that out.)
    Oh no! I’m extremely rude and terrible for pointing this out! “You should just enjoy it and stop whining!” the crowds say. “Be thankful this was even translated!” the crowds say.
    (Sarcasm ends.)

    I think the editor should be changed to a more competent one. I don’t intend to bash the editor as a person, but their editing skills.

      1. The editor wasn’t an English native – hey, it’s me!

        And my main job is making Economic Analysis Reports (in English), so it doesn’t revolve around fictional writing in English, at most I write novel in Japanese, and you know us Japanese with tenses.
        My English is good, its just that I’m not used on editing fictions. I just think that as long as its can be understood, it should be fine. I’ll try to improve on the quality more.

        I don’t find it to be harsh, I appreciate the sarcasm bit, its hard to spot sarcastic remarks in writing.
        Sorry for the typos, and incorrect tenses, I edited it on mobile phones, I’ll put it on grammarly or something later.

        The spicy girl is chinese saying, tl thinks everyone knows what ‘spicy’ refers to so she didn’t bother to put on footnote, I’ll ask her to add it on footnote.

        One suggestion: Maybe get a proofreader to double-check? It might be fine to double-check with Grammarly or something like you plan on doing though.

        For the “spicy girl” sentence, I actually knew what it means… (but I appreciate the effort in explaining the term) the “what is it even saying?” I wrote was pretty rhetorical, though I understand that it doesn’t seem that way. For that part, I was trying to point out that it might be better to put it as something else like “what a feisty girl!”.

The thing is, the Translator wanted it to be as close and gave out Chinese feeling as possible – I mean, like, few localization as possible?, so when say, later, if in different novels there’s the usual 24 characters core of Chinese stuff (that is compulsory or your stories will be banned in China, she will write it- I had no idea what is it except on the ones from wiki though haha).
        It’s like writing Takoyaki instead of Octopus ball, I think?
